My New Super Power! Sewing Reversible (Superhero) Headbands

I have a love/hate relationship with my sewing machine.

When the kids were little, I made blankets and bibs for them. I thought my sewing adventures were over. But, I decided to make one more blanket to discover that I had lost the cord of sewing machine. I took it as a sign. I also had to hand sew a blanket, but that's another story.

Fast forward several years and my motivation to sew returned.

Out of frustration at the cost of headbands my kid likes, I broke down and bought a cord to my sewing machine. And, discovered all the cool fabric on Etsy.

Part of my motivation is her upcoming birthday. She is having a superhero party and I thought it would be fun to wear a Supergirl headband.

I found the perfect fabric! And, if I didn't screw it up, I could make enough for her best friends.

Before I even cut into the cool fabric, I made a bunch of headbands practicing.

DIY Photo Booth Frame Prop

DIY Photo Booth Frame Prop

The idea of creating a photo booth for this year's Fall Fest at the kids' school was really exciting especially since it was being sponsored by HP Social Media Snapshots.

Our school event is called Fall Fest, but it's still a Halloween themed party. Kids can come in costume which means that props aren't necessary like at a birthday party. Of course, just because a trunk full of props wouldn't be needed, I still wanted to make it feel like a photo booth. I did this by setting the scene and creating a photo frame prop out of foam core.

The photo frame was super easy to make and I didn't even have a ruler! I thought I had a metal yardstick, but it seems it has gotten lost in one of our many moves. Needless to say, I improvised with an old, square bathroom towel hanger and a small plastic ruler.

DIY Doctor Who Cyberman Costume

DIY Doctor Who Cyberman Costume

Over the years, my son has been very creative with his Halloween costumes. When he was three he wanted to be a chef, the following year a stop light, and he's even been a LEGO. This year may have been the most challenging. He wanted to by a Cyberman from Doctor Who.

You would think this would be an easy find considering how popular the show is with cosplayers. The only full costume that I could find is terrible unless you want to go as a classic Doctor Who cyberman and he did not.

Because You Think You Want to Carve a Watermelon Shark

A few weeks ago I made a shark out of a watermelon for my son's First Communion Party and featured it last week as my Wordless Wednesday post.  It was carved on a whim and mostly because I over heard my husband bragging that I could do it to my boss, no less.  The problem was - I have never done it before, ever!  Talked about it, but never did it.  I felt on the hook.

There was a moment, while I was taking a shower, that my husband had informed that his mom was going to cut it.  My reply was something like, "shucks, I so wanted to try my hand at the shark!"

He stopped her so I could do it.

Thanks to pinterest, I quickly found the directions but none where perfect and I had to go to a few posts to get a better view or more detailed direction.  By the time I got to the fin, I was done with the whole thing and improvised (badly) with it just so I could wash my hands and get a beer.

I do wish I would have thought to take pictures through the process but it is probably better that I didn't since I had guests waiting.  Besides, I was way to busy trying to recreate from a picture a carved shark from a watermelon.

This is not the place to get detailed instructions but what I will do is give you the nitty gritty.

What you will need: Besides an oblong watermelon and other various fruits for your shark you will also need a dry erase marker, a knife, probably a pairing knife and veggie peeler.

What you have to do: Cut the bottom of your shark off and at an angle.  How big you want your shark to be will determine how much you cut off the bottom so use your own discretion.  By cutting it at an angle, it makes it look like your shark is popping out of the "water."

Using the dry erase marker draw the mouth and cut it out.  I imagined Pac-man when I was making my cut but feel free to imagine what you need to in order to make a mouth for your shark.  I did not use a marker (dry or otherwise) and I made a pretty good mouth.

Carve out the fruit and set aside.  You can use a melon baller or ice cream scope but I'm not all that fancy so I just cut it in chunks

What you should do: The next step I did not do because I was in a hurry and did not catch on how to do it but it will make your shark look even cooler.  Rachel Ray has a great video on this step if you need to watch it, I will wait (I'd embed it, but they don't allow it).

If you did not watch it, carve a line, following the mouth, about a half inch away from the opening and scrape or peel the green off with a veggie peeler to expose the white.  Once you do that, cut triangles into the white on the top and bottom for the teeth.

What you can do: To make the fin, cut a triangle out of the rind you cut off the bottom to make the fin.  I cut a slit in the top to fit it into but I guess tooth picks work.  Finally, add the eyes, mine are blueberries held in place with toothpicks.

Because There is Marker on Your Monitor

What happens when your toddler takes a sharpie and draws circles on your fancy flat screen computer monitor?

You use the monitor for a few months, internally cussing out the makers of sharpie for making them so permanent.

But, as I sit at the computer trying to type a post about something or other, I went on Facebook to see if this may have happened to someone else and got a bunch of replies...

I had already tried hand sanitizer (it was all I had) and I made the Husband get me his WD40, which he reluctantly tried to no avail.

It was as if it was mocking me, laughing at my attempts to get rid of it.  I did not have a magic eraser, I used mine to the bitter end and had not replaced it.  The the husband reminded me that we have the mop.

Now, this is not a paid endorsement and I have received nothing for this but I tore a piece off my mop and wouldn't you know it - the damn thing worked!

Magic eraser really did work and left the screen spotless.

She is lucky she is so cute.

Just the "Write" Kind of Valentines (free printables)

Just the "Write" Kind of Valentines (free printables)

Valentine's day is tomorrow!  Ever since Pinterest entered my life I find it hard to buy a box of valentines.

Don't get me wrong, they are swell, and all but now I feel this pressure for us to make something.  This is completely my own doing especially after the cards we made last year!

This year I decided to go low key and do something practical.

I thought this year we should go sensible so I turned to Pinterest, of course, and found some great ideas incorporating a pencil (because they are always losing them!)

MiBellaDesigns on Pinterest.

But what's Valentine's Day without something sweet?!??!

So, I came up with my own printables, using the brilliant ideas above as inspiration.

Make This House a Home Canvas Paint Project for the Kids

Bonus Giveaway!  You win everything pictured! -  3M Scotch Blue Painters Tape, 3M disposable respirator, Glidden Testers and a cute collection of Granite Gold cleaning products

I am so excited to bring a bonus giveaway!  You will win: 4 rolls of ScotchBlue Painter Tape in two sizes, One Glidden Tester (you pick a color and they send it to you), a 3M Disposable Respirator and a Sample Bag of Granite Gold Cleaning Products!

(But, don't forget to enter to win the Granite Gold giveaway!)

In preparation for the Make This House a Home Giveaway Hop, I debated doing a craft project and thanks to the sweet people at 3M Scotch Blue Painters Tape and Glidden Testers I bring you hand-print art!

I have never attempted this before but after seeing the cute hand print projects on pinterest I thought to myself, "self, your kids can do that!"

3M Blue Painters Tape Edge-Lock™ Paint Line Protector

I had so much fun exploring the 3M website that I had complete confidence in attempting to add their initials to the  project.

Once the tape was down, I used the brush included with the tester to paint the kids hands.  Sure, they are meant to try out paint color with out a commitment but they are also great for craft projects.  Walmart has the full line (306 colors) of the Glidden Paint Testers which sell for $2.94 each, but beginning on July 23, there will be a coupon available on Coupons.com for $2.00 off, making the tester less than $1. Glidden paint testers are available in all 306 colors of the Glidden Brilliance Collection, sold only at Walmart.

As you can see, or can't see, the kids went a little crazy with the painting.  So much for the hand print idea but now I have unique wall art.  My big mistake was not trusting that the tape will come off so I did not seal the tape as I should have done.

The final outcome... Still wondering if it the right place.  What do you think?

Now it is your turn!  Enter via rafflecopter and good luck! (if you can't see the rafflecopter form, please hit refresh)

Sweet and Easy 3D Customized Photo Valentines

Sweet 3D Customized Photo Valentine
I just love Valentine's Day now that I have a kid old enough to trade them at school.  I envied the kids whose mom made the ones that they handed out.  Not that there is anything wrong with the store bought ones because they were cool, too, but there seemed to be something extra special about the ones made out of dollies and covered in glitter.

For as crafty as I think I am, I can not see myself cutting out (or helping to cut out) twenty red hearts, gluing them to dollies that easily tear and then coming up with cute sayings to write on them.  Besides, the box cards come with candy!  Then that damn pinterest came along and I found that there are some really cute ideas that don't involve glue or cutting!  Hooray for pinterest!  What did we do last year?

Some ideas I considered...

But seeing as I use to be a photographer and happen to marry one, this idea stood out...

And this is what we came up with...

I made a slit  just above and just below his hand with an exact-o knife and then the photo was glued to card stock. I did the same for Superman photo but off to the side.

Look What I Made, Baby! Make a Fiddle Blanket in Less then a Day.

Baby girl in homemade bibs

Despite working at an arts & crafts store in high school, I am not a crafting kind of person.

Sure, I can and do a craft, but more out of boredom than necessity. It's a way to fill an afternoon and spend time with the kids. It's not a way for me to say... give gifts or make money.

When my first grader was a baby, he had so many cute bibs! I kept many of them, but they were not baby girl cute.

I went shopping and promptly hated every bib they had for little girls. She's not a "diva" or a "princess" and she most certainly will not be the "OMG give it all to me" kind of a baby.  She may be as a toddler but we are not there, yet.

I decided to make her bibs and drove straight to the fabric store and bought a bunch of cute prints and terry cloth.  I made dozens of bibs in the first go around using the cereal box pattern. It is by far the easiest and fastest way to make a bib and it is super cute.

Once there was enough, I put away my sewing machine. Along with a bunch of half started bibs.

Then my niece had her second baby. I wanted to make her baby a fiddle blanket. I made one for my baby girl and now I was determined to do it for her.

I dragged out my sewing supplies, Besides the scraps of fabric I had, I also trimmed the half finished bibs down for the blanket. Yes, I could have just finished the bibs but, I love the way the blanket turned out.

Once I had the pieces, I pinned them together and sewed each together one block at a time.  To the yellow and white gingham, I sewed a plastic grocery bag to it so it crinkles when you touch it. In retrospect,  I would not have chosen that particular block but, eh, live and learn.

After all the blocks were sewn together, I added looped ribbons to the right side of the fabric and sewed the single piece of pink and white stripped flannel to the blocks. Now baby has something more to play with.

All materials I used, I already had in my possession.  Nothing was bought (unless you count postage).

btw... Is that not the cutest baby picture!
