When Six Year Olds Fight

He walked through the front door, passed me with out a word and went straight to his room.  I knew something was wrong when Goofy was dropped off after his play date but even the mom who dropped him off was confused over the details.  All she knew was her little girl, was a crying mess in the car, apologizing for what ever horror she could have done and my boy was sulking.  They are six, how bad could a fight be? Oh, the troubles of the youth.

The day started at the beach and their troubles started there as well.  How, I am not sure but if I was to guess I would say it was because Baby wanted to hold hands with Goofy's friend.  There seems to be a tension between them that I can only explain as the Jealousy Effect.  They can only play with each other, when they are in each others company.  They can not have any other form of competition for attention from other would be friends or siblings.  And, they can get mean, they know which buttons to press.  In other words, they are the jealous sort.

My son's empathy trait is also sorely, um, underdeveloped?  He has not been able to master other people's feelings or always respond appropriately to certain social situations.  He is not good at putting himself in other people's shoes and that day he was really struggling with trying to understand why his gal pal did not want to play the game he wanted and why it was more appealing to play with Baby instead of doing what he wants.

In other words, my boy was being a brat.  He was in full out jerk mode.  I was beside myself.  How do you teach them that a friend that puts up with his idiosyncrasies is a blessing and you better treat her right?   Oh, wait they are six!

By the second rest period, they had made up and were friends again.  They even wanted to play a little longer at her house and after a quick call to her mom, their play date was extended.  As we walked back to the car I heard her say, "we had a really bad break-up but I am glad we are together again."

sigh

Fast forward to the end of the play date and as it turns out, they broke up, again.  This time she was having a bad afternoon.  My guess - it was a really long day and they were both just tired.

Goofy was just sick about it, or in his words, "spiraling out of control."  When prompted all he could say was that he did not understand what he was feeling, but he wanted to apologize.  He hurt inside and was afraid she would never want to see him again.

So, I called his gal pal's mom, dreading the call because what six year old calls to apologize?

Apparently,  the gal pal wanted to call, too.

I am very proud of both of  them and a little scared.

Remember what it was like to have your first friend?  Do you remember what it was like when you had your first fight?

I must admit, I am no stranger to fighting... read about my fight when I was six here.

Let's just get this over with

Poor Goofy has the flu.
I got THE call from the school nurse today that he was not feeling well and not eating his lunch.

Thing is... He always picks at his lunch so how can that be a symptom of what is wrong?

She put him on the phone, because "you know your guy best" and I could actually hear in his voice he was sick! My mom was right! She could tell I was sick by the sound of my voice. Go figure!?!

Luckily, the Husband was off and went to get him. They all slept. Baby, Goffy and Daddy. When I got home they were all up and watching TV. It was not till later that his fever spiked and headache returned.

Hearing him cry for me to "cuddle him" while we waited for the Tylenol to kick in was comical but hearing him cry for help made me giggle and cry at the same time because I could not take his pain away but was still cute that he thinks I can. If only. But it is only the flu and soon his discomfort will pass and hopefully the smell of throw up from my bedroom.

My Daughter's Other Mommy

I am jealous of the babysitter.  The other mommy.  Her full-time care giver.

When I dropped, Jamba Mama off today, I took her out of the car seat to hold her one more time before handing her off to the sitter and she nearly jumped from my arms.  She was reaching for the sitter, smiling and happy to see her and paid me no never mind as I was leaving.  I was more then a little crushed and even sadder since I just saw a blurb about weekend mommies.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE our child care provider and she is wonderful with our little mama (who is now four months and three weeks old) but it still a little awkward to hold my bébé and she nearly jumps into the arms of another woman.  Needless to say, I am now over the initial sadness because I know that she is in an environment where she is happy to be in and is excited to see her care giver.  I do hope my daughter will see the sitter as a that or maybe as a grandmotherly type and not as my replacement - her other mommy.

I then went and re-read the blog blurb I saw in my email (three weeks ago) and realized that it was just another mommy war… another us vs. them, SAHM vs. working mom debate that seems to be endless.  I am truly so sick that these debates still go on day after day, year after year.  Why is this debated?  I would love to stay home but it would be irresponsible of me in my situation to do so but Goddess bless the women that can stay at home...  I would in a heart beat.  Not all mommies would be good at home.  A “friend” of mine is at home with her kid and spends most of the day on Facebook.  He is in middle school and does not ride a bike or a skateboard and I am not sure if they actually venture out of the apartment.

As I browsed more into this website, there appears to be a “mommy war” about breastfeeding and spanking (not together, separate topics).  I am afraid to go anywhere else on the site to find out what other things we are arguing about today.  What happen to “we are women her us roar” and being united, yada yada yada?  Can’t we all just get along?  We are doing the same thing… raising children the best way we can and all, ugh.  I wonder in this push to get equal rights we forgot that some of us would like to stay at home to raise the kids and just because we have a right to work outside the home does not mean we have to do it.

This was not meant to be a rant about how everybody has an opinion and it is the right one; damn everybody else and their opinion.  If I would do a blog about that, it would be:  “Can Someone Explain Why Gay Marriage is wrong without Referring to Scripture?"  Instead, I really just wish I can bring bébé to work with me and then I would truly be a working mommy.
