Stocking Stuffer Ideas for Your Favorite Adult Inspired by Amazon Prime

This conversation contains affiliate links.

Well into my adulthood, my mom still made Christmas stockings for us. Those stockings weren't always hanging on her mantel. Some years she brought them with her when visiting our homes and later, hanging in her nursing room.

I'll never forget the first year she gave one to my husband. At the time, he was just a friend. She gave him a stocking anyway. He was delighted to find toothpaste, shaving cream, and some other novelty items. It was one of the many fond memories he shares about her. Especially how she saved him from going out to get those necessities.

I'm thinking of taking up the tradition for my brother and sister-in-law and started browsing Amazon for ideas. Here are a few of my favorites. You can see the full 'Stuff the Stocking' list on Amazon.

The Best Sweaters to Wear on National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day #GiveHeifer

The Best of the Worse Sweaters to Wear on National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day #GiveHeifer

Thank you Heifer Intl. for my amazing sweater! This post contains affiliate links.

Feeling the holiday blues? Need a quick boost to your spirits? Well, dig out that ugly sweater you have tucked in the back of your closet because December 18 is National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day! Who knew all those ugly sweaters grandmothers gave us would actually be put to use?

I'm not a fan of selfies or ugly Christmas sweaters but when Heifer.org reached out and asked if I wanted one and to help promote giving a Heifer gift this year, I could not refuse.

Heifer's mission is to end hunger and poverty by providing livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training to improve the lives of those who struggle to feed and provide for their family.

To celebrate the day and to help Heifer on its mission, share a selfie of yourself in your ugly sweater with #GiveHeifer. For every selfie posted with the hashtag, Heifer will receive $5! Heifer is currently working in 30 countries including the U.S. so won't this just be the easiest way to give back this Christmas?

To help with your hunt for the perfect sweater, I've scoured Amazon for the absolute best ugly sweaters to inspire you and since most are Prime items, you can have one just in time.

2015 Holiday Lighting Ceremonies in Northeast Ohio + Cleveland Suburbs

2015 Holiday Lighting Ceremonies in Northeast Ohio + Cleveland Suburbs

It's beginning to feel less fall like...

As I look out at Lake Erie on this gorgeous sunny day and see a bright blue sky, it's hard to imagine snow will be coming soon. Sadly, snow is inevitable in Northeast Ohio, but so are all of the fun holiday lighting activities!

Last year, we went to three lighting ceremonies plus Holiday Circlefest. There are two that we really loved and one that was just okay. It could have been so much better. Maybe, we'll try it again.

Here are our Holiday Lighting favorites in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio + a Calendar of events for the rest of the year

Crocker Park's Annual Tree Lighting - November 21, 2015

Crocker Park's Annual Tree Lighting - November 21, 2015

Crocker Park and Light up Lakewood were our favorites! Santa was shot from a cannon and we got our pictures taken in a gigantic snow globe.

A video posted by Mary Johnson (@mryjhnsn) on

List of events at Crocker Park

5 pm: Performance by community groups on the Main Stage as well as family-friendly activities and costumed characters throughout Crocker Park

6:45 pm: Main Stage presentation hosted by Jen Toohey & Tim Richards from Christmas 102’s Jen & Tim in the Morning

7 pm: Musical performance by Chrissie Fit

7:15 pm: Magical act by magician Stephen Knight

7:30 pm: Help Santa Claus countdown to light up Crocker Park with a brand new Tree Lighting Extravaganza!

*Scheduled times are subject to change

After the Holiday Tree Lighting, visit the MetroHealth Santa House, located in the East Park (between Cheesecake Factory and Vieng’s)

Light Up Lakewood - December 5, 2015

Light Up Lakewood

Light Up Lakewood is a festival, with a parade, and fireworks! Plus, an all-day event featuring many of Lakewood's favorite establishments. If you only go to one - this is the one you really need to take the family to see!

Detroit Avenue will transform into a pedestrian only winter wonderland of activity including

• The main stage showcasing the talents of live bands and student performers

• Pictures with Santa Claus

• Street performers and costumed characters

• Indoor and outdoor crafts, games and activities for the entire family

• Shopping specials offered by select businesses and vendors located within the festival grounds

• A centralized food court with vendors, food trucks and much more

• An indoor Vendor Village for you to warm up and purchase some of the finest crafts and holiday treats.

Holiday CircleFest - December 6, 2015

Holiday CircleFest

Holiday CircleFest is when Wade Oval kicks off the holidays, opens the ice rink, and shows of holiday decorations. The museums are all free and there are even events planned in Wade Oval like ice sculpting and carriage rides. I must admit, we spend a great deal of time at the botanical gardens but this year - ice skating!

The Holiday Lighting Calendar is not a complete list of holiday lighting events but ones I have found. If you would like to add yours - please email me. Be sure to call any event prior to attending, just in case I have some information wrong or it was canceled.

Shhh... Don't Spoil Santa for My Kids

More and more parents I know are telling their kids that Santa is not real.

I understand all of their reasons, except lying to their children. I lie to my kids all. the. time. Maybe not outright lies, maybe just little white lies, but lies all the same.

Of all the things my parents told me growing up, lying about there not being a Santa was not one that I was upset about. My mom used to tell me that if I popped a zit on my face I'd die. I once laid awake all night waiting to die from a brain hemorrhage because I popped a zit on my face. Now that is a lie to be angry about. But, I guess my mom saved me from zit scars.

I never felt betrayed about Santa not being real but we celebrated the feast day of St. Nicholas of Bari, too. Sure, it confused me as I got older and my brain was trying to reconcile Santa and St. Nick, but knowing that our traditional Santa was inspired by a bishop gone saint, who helped the poor is really a wonderful idea to celebrate. He was a man who gave his wealth and his life to the poor. It proves that the spirit and generosity of one man can move others.

It is no secret I love the city I call home as well as most of Northeast Ohio. Proof of that is the annual lighting ceremony that was once this sad little affair that has grown into a wonderful festival.

Instagram Again Saturday - Kids and a #Christmas Tree

Instagram, Again Saturdays | Reliving Old Instagrams, One Saturday at a Time

You know when you start snapping pictures and you forget to write about them, tag them, or even add a location? Well, I have no idea where I took this photo last year. All I know it is not our tree since the kids have coats on and it was apparently raining because RD is holding an umbrella.

Note to self: Need to be better at writing instagram captions!

A Night Out With Mr. Kringle and Company's Inventionasium at Tower City Center #sponsored

We were provided passes to Kringle's Inventionasium® to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own. All photos, except the instagram images, were taken by my husband - Cleveland's Picturologist.

One of the many joys of having kids at Christmas time is meeting Santa. A joy of celebrating the holidays in Cleveland is the gorgeous decorations at Tower City Center. We recently had the opportunity to experience both at the invitation of Mr. Kringle and Company to tour the Kringle's Inventionasium®.

Located on the first floor of Tower City Center, by the Sweet Factory where Fuddruckers and a market research office once was, is the magical place where Kris Kringle has set-up his Inventionasium - a place where imagination is celebrated and the magic of the holiday is top priority.

The premise is that the world's children have been invited to invent and develop new toys in Santa's workshop. As you travel through the impressively decorated space, it is easy to believe you have been transported to someplace magical.

The first time we took our oldest was in 2008. It was on a whim and all we had was our crappy cell phone to take pictures.

We were prepared this year so when entered the Inventionasium the Hubs had his camera out and I had mine ready as we put our lab coats on, took an oath to be childlike, and had our imagination tested with Mr. Kringle's personal assistant Charolette Hollyhop or in our case her awesome stand-in.

Once we passed through a special cupboard door, our guide (who was amazing)  took us to the Brainstorming Cave, Imaginoise Workshop, I.D.I.D.I.T. Testing Facility, Build-A-Bubble Department, Grow Snow Laboratory, and ending with a private visit with the big guy himself!

#BrightStarKids - Unique, Fun Ideas for Holiday Gift Giving #sponsored

#BrightStarKids - Unique, Fun Ideas for Holiday Gift Giving #sponsored
This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Bright Star Kids. The opinions and text are all mine.

My little one is a sucker for clothes. I have no idea where she gets it from, probably from her dad, but she loves clothes and anything that is unique or pretty - bonus for both. I look for quality and a reasonable price. I think RD and I can agree with both thanks to our Bright Star Kids.

Bright Star Kids specializes in super cute, personalized shirts, wall art, name labels, and more. The line they offer is unique and fun, which made it difficult to pick something for darling daughter. I would have gotten something for my oldest but their sizes stop at six. Nevertheless I found three tees that I know my daughter would love.

Bright Star Kids also have a holiday collection of tees perfect for the special baby in your life to that preschooler on your list.

I'm not a fan of putting the kid's names on their tees but what I love about this company is that you can personalize them anyway you can imagine! Name or no name!

Since RD is taking ballet I thought the toe shoe tee would be perfect for her to wear to class. And, I really dug the old school boom box and started to personalize it with "old school" but thought she would get a kick of seeing her favorite song on it instead. Besides, it will be a fun reminder when she is sick of it.

For the last tee, I almost went the Christmas route until I found All I Need is Love. This is not a tee to personalize; I thought it was perfect for her just the way it is.

Unwrapping Northeast Ohio - 10 Family Friendly, Cleveland Inspired (Non-Toy) Gift Ideas

Unwrapping Northeast Ohio - 10 Family Friendly, Cleveland Inspired (Non-Toy) Gift Ideas

It's that time of year when distant relatives start asking what to get the kids for Christmas. We tend to give standard responses, Legos and Disney, but what I really want to say is - time.

They want your time and attention but since it is not possible due to distance and circumstances I thought I would create a list of what would make them seem closer to you, even when you are miles apart.

Now, this list is pretty specific to things in Northeast Ohio, but that does not mean it can't be adapted for any city, anywhere in the world. These ideas include the whole family, do one and done.

My Favorite Tradition: The Advent Wreath

My favorite tradition while growing up was lighting the advent wreath. I am not sure why, could be my fascination with fire or that it was a way to count down the weeks to Christmas. Every year I think about making one but I'm always too late and never get to the craft store.

This is the first year that baby girl got to light a candle in the wreath. Her main motivation for going to Sunday school, besides the crafts, was the chance to light the pink candle. The first week she was told that it would be lit on the third week of advent and she agreed to wait. The second week she cried because she had to wait another week. And finally the third week came and she woke Sunday morning – throwing up.

She got to light to the last candle and she had to wear a purple dress in honor of the occasion.

Happy Christmas eve.

Cure for the Office Blues: Hot Chocolate Bar and some printables

This post contains affiliate links.

Winter is here, snow has finally coated my corner of Northeast Ohio and to help ease the pain of the winter blues in our office we hosted mini hot chocolate bars set up all over the office.

Hot cocoa bars are all over Pinterest. In fact, it is hard not to scroll through Pinterest this time of year and not see at least one pin dedicated to hot chocolate. And, if you follow me on Pinterest you know I have been pinning those types of pins to my kids’ annual cookie party board. When the opportunity to do something like this in the office came up, I could not resist. Who doesn't like hot cocoa? (Well, I had them covered too with hot apple cider, but that is another post.)

Cure for the Office Blues: Hot Chocolate Bar and some printables
The lovely Ali with her fantastic (and fun) creation.
I work for a fairly large office with four coffee stations so we loaded up the fun stuff on trays and set them up near our coffee machines. Each tray had: marshmallows, candy canes, nuts, sprinkles, chocolate chips, pirouettes, candy, mints, cinnamon, whipped cream, and of course – hot chocolate.

Putting everything on trays made set-up and clean-up uber easy.  Also, the coffee stations are pretty tight on space and the trays are easy to move.  It occurs to me now that it would have been way more interesting to have different toppings at different stations to encourage everyone to see different parts of the office but, I'll save that for next year.

Cure for the Office Blues: Hot Chocolate Bar and some printables and tips

Prepping for four coffee stations was more work than I thought it would be but judging from people’s reactions and creations – it was absolutely worth it. And, it was a lot of fun. The hard part was keeping it a secret! As a bonus, I can save all of the printables for next year and can easily recreate this for the big cookie party. Two for the price of one!

Cure for the Office Blues: Hot Chocolate Bar and some printables
Thanks, Brett for the photo of your hot cocoa!

If you would like to do this in your office or home click here for the spoon signs and here for the sign. They are free and have no watermarks.

The spoon signs have guidelines to cut on but will not line up with any labels. I folded the cutouts in half and cut small slits above the words and below the words to thread a spoon through, taping the back.  Goodies that don't need spoons I taped the signs to large candy canes.

Cheers!
