Penguin Shores Meets Cleveland Shores at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

Penguin Shores at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo | iNeedaPlaydate.com
The Zoo is free on Mondays but we were provided tickets to the Rainforest by Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Opinions are all our own.

There are very few things that the kids and I agree on but one is our love of penguins. From the ones that ended up in Madagascar to the ones with happy feet, we just can't get enough!

Lucky for us, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has brought Penguin Shores to the zoo this past weekend.
"The penguin exhibit, designed by Virginia-based Animal Interaction Design Group, in partnership with Cleveland Metroparks Exhibits team, is slated to run through mid-September. The special exhibit houses six African black-footed penguins and will be free with regular Zoo admission. It features naturalistic rock work with nest boxes, ledges and irregular surfaces, and a pool for swimming. Guests will be able to learn about penguins in the wild and conservation efforts under way to help them." source
The last time penguins were at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo we saw penguins in a mixed-species exhibit at the Birds of the World building which included humboldt, macaroni and king penguins. The king penguins were the last species to leave the Zoo in 2002.

Unwrapping Northeast Ohio - 10 Family Friendly, Cleveland Inspired (Non-Toy) Gift Ideas

Unwrapping Northeast Ohio - 10 Family Friendly, Cleveland Inspired (Non-Toy) Gift Ideas

It's that time of year when distant relatives start asking what to get the kids for Christmas. We tend to give standard responses, Legos and Disney, but what I really want to say is - time.

They want your time and attention but since it is not possible due to distance and circumstances I thought I would create a list of what would make them seem closer to you, even when you are miles apart.

Now, this list is pretty specific to things in Northeast Ohio, but that does not mean it can't be adapted for any city, anywhere in the world. These ideas include the whole family, do one and done.

Our #HappyinCLE Bucket List for September in Northeast Ohio!

Hello September!  I have scoured the web (and stalked my blogger friends like @FindTimeforFun) to find what will be on our bucket list of things to do in September.

I also, finally, figured out a use for Google calendar! Sure this is a lazy way to go but there is so much to-do going on in September!  Heck, I even started a Pinterest board!

Word(less) Wednesday - The City of Townsville (aka #CLE)

While visiting a relative at Metro Hospital, the kids and I were looking at the city from the 11th floor.  I asked baby girl what city that was and her voice deepened a little when she said, "The city of Townsville."

Unexpected Surprises Courtesy of the National Senior Games (@SeniorGames1) in #CLE

When it was announced that there would be a medical mart in Cleveland I really didn't give it much thought. In fact, I am not really sure I was even working downtown when it was first announced so I really did not care if it happened or not.

the flame for the Senior Games (which will stay)

When the cost and timeline was debated in the papers and on the local news I honestly rolled my eyes because I just wanted to see the weather report.

they greeted us as we entered the festival

When it was under construction I was annoyed because it inconvenienced me. When it was finished, I was relived and slightly curious.

enjoying a break on the grass

This past weekend was the start of the first convention - the National Senior Games.  It was also the first real opportunity to explore the Cleveland Convention Center as it was meant to be with a convention.

Admittedly, I had other motives for going and never made it inside but over the next two weeks there will be plenty of opportunities to do so since the games will be going on and there are events scheduled and opened to the public
Rusted Root!

Now, if this was 1995 and you would have told me that in 2013 I would be seeing Rusted Root at the National Senior Games with my two kids and that guy I occasionally worked with and is now my husband I would have choked on my clove cigarette. So, when I found out Rusted Root was playing the opening night of the National Senior Games and it was free, all of a sudden I cared about the medical mart and I took those kids and that guy to go hear them play.

Speaking of 1995 I was still nursing a crush I had and take a look at who we ran into…

Me and Gene Simmons (aka the art dude from my first job)
The building itself has this brilliant design. It is built, for the most part below ground and the roof slopes but is also this amazing grassy hill which flattens in an open grassy area. The convention center goes below Lakeside Avenue and above is Mall C, also a grassy area. It truly is a wonderful space and worth all of the (minor) inconveniences. I can say this now.

LasikPlus gave away free ice cream

The opening ceremony ended with the lighting of the torch and fireworks, but in the true spirit of Cleveland weather the heavens opened and it poured. So, we left. Sure it lasted only a few minutes but we came to hear the band so I was good. Besides, Malley’s was beckoning us.

Yes, the kids ate popsicles first and we went after 6

The next morning I started digging to see if there was more and low and behold there is and you would not believe all of the fun (and free) events that they have planned! The complete list is here and it runs all day, every day for the next two weeks. All free and open to the public and that is on top of actually watching the senior games (that list is here).

the view looking up the slope, us at the top and the the view from the bottom looking south

If you are planning a trip to CLE the Convention Center should be on your list of things to see, even if there isn’t a convention going on.

Any surprises this summer that you would like to share?

How to Start the Summer Off in Northeast Ohio

Northeast Ohio can be a fickle bitch and this year’s start to the summer season proved it by way of crummy weather.

Since, we are seasoned Ohioans this came as no surprise when the week I took off from my day job turned out to be raining and cold. What did we do…? Enjoyed our fantastic city anyway! Sure there was no trip to the beach (or the pool) as planned but we still had a great time on Staycation 2013!

Our Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is free on Mondays, but it was a downpour so off to the Cleveland Children’s Museum for some wholesome indoor fun. This was the first time that baby girl was there (that she remembers) and she was over the moon! Her favorite was the grocery store and she had no problems playing cashier and taking money. In fact, she is really good at taking the money…

The exhibit right now is Centuries of Childhood: An American Story and both kids enjoyed exploring how kids from the past lived. But, I would have to say that baby spent the most of her time in the Big Red Barn while her older brother had the run of the joint.

Next on our to-do list was the zoo. Well, my to-do list. The kids had more fun at the parks that are at the zoo then the actual animals but the animals were not a complete bust since the elephants and giraffes were very active. Their activity may have had something to do with the day being on the cooler side and sporadic showers. Nothing to send us home or even for cover and I would say it was actually nice to walk in the rain and enjoy the animals.

This was also the first time that I have seen the The RainForest. Usually by the end of our zoo tour we are all too exhausted to see it but now that the kids are older we had no problem ending our day in there and it was a big success.

My son is a weather buff and was in awe of the Tropical Rain Storm that goes off every 12 minutes. Yep, a tropical rainstorm occurs, complete with lightning, wind, thunder and rain in the exhibit featuring Asian porcupines. I was fascinated by the porcupines and did not know that there would be rain but my son did because he was listening to the “chatter” on the radio that plays in the exhibit. A couple of actors talk about the weather conditions and the impeding storm. He loved it!

We rounded out our week on Friday with seeing Man of Steel at the Valley View Theater in real 3D. Another first for me was seeing something at theater in real 3D because I have never been able to sit through 3D before. I can never really see it and it gave me incredible headaches and all I can say is – boy has technology advanced. Sure I am last to know this but it was very cool and glad to see Superman this way!

Before the movie we hit up Denny’s for breakfast and then walked the Ohio & Erie Towpath. For as long as it has been up the Husband and I have talked about walking but this was the first time we did it and it was very neat. Yes, it is in the middle of industry but to have something made of steel, surrounded by nature in the middle of an industrial main street is pretty inspiring. We can have progress without compromising all of the beauty that was originally there, or something like that.

We also had some fun taking random photos of the kids because that is what you do while on vacation, even if it is a staycation.  Now, the original plan was to spend little to no money this week but since it rained we ended up spending money but it was worth it.  Cleveland has some wonderful treasures and none of it broke the bank.

What is on your to-do list in your city this summer?

#MonsterJam at @TheQArena and Family Four Pack with Pit Passes Up for Grabs!

When my brother and I were little kids our mom took us to the (old) Cleveland Convention Center to see the monster truck rally.

My brother absolutely loved it! I don’t remember much but I do remember how excited my little brother was and I know he had a blast! The only the thing that I truly remember from that afternoon is how high were up in the stands and how very, very loud it was in that old arena.

As luck would have it, the kids and I have been invited to opening night of Monster Jam at the Q and I get to share with the kids the excitement of watching oversized trucks crush tiny cars.

I wasn’t sure what the kids would think so I turned to their official website and played some of the videos, needless to say both Baby and Goofy were pretending to be monster trucks and trashing my living room. This should be a good time!

Besides our invite, we get to give away 4 tickets to Saturday’s 2PM + 4 pit passes! The pit passes are to Monster Jam’s Party in the Pits which runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 16th and Sunday February 17th, prior to the 2:00 p.m. show.

This pre-show pit party gives fans (with a pit pass and show ticket) the chance to see these larger-than-life monster trucks up close, meet the drivers behind the wheel, take pictures and get autographs!

The pit passes are not just for this giveaway but will be available for $10 online at theQarena.com after tickets have been purchased and at the Quicken Loans Arena box office, while supplies last. This pre-show party has sold out every year!

The Great Big Home & Garden Expo is returning to the @IXCenter! Tickets for the @GreatBigShow can be yours!

February in Cleveland can be sunny and warmish or it could be freezing, you just never know what to expect but I can tell you one thing for sure - The Great Big Home and Garden Show will certainly be the way I plan on defrosting from this year’s frost!

The kids and I went last year and had so much fun browsing the gardens and playing in the Playground World exhibit. Sure, we spent more time at Playground World but it was fantastic to see signs of life in the middle of winter.

The gardens were breath taking and the ideas for our home were just brilliant! I learned more about landscaping than I would have done on my own. I might not have put them to use last year but I am more resolved than ever to do more with our little backyard and I know I will find the information I need at The Great Big Home and Garden Show.

Sure the show is for home improvement but there will also be some famous foodies there to share their knowledge. My plan is to catch Matt Fish, Owner and Chef of Melt Bar and Grilled presenting Classic Comfort Food at its Best because he’s the owner of Melt which is hands down one of my absolute favorite places to eat! I also want to try catch Chef Chris Crary, Bravo's "Top Chef" Season 9 and luckily they will be presenting on the same day!

If food is not your thing, take a look at the complete list of events there will be celebrity guests, landscape designers, homes and gardens - it is really a BIG show!

For 9 days only, February 2 – 10, 2013, The Great Big Home and Garden Show will be back at the I-X Center and I get to give away two tickets! Of course, if you would like to purchase tickets, order them online and save $3!  As a bonus using promotion code INAP will get you another $1 off your tickets.

Spank! at @PlayhouseSquare and My Dirty Secret

I have a confession to make - I have never seen a show at Playhouse Square. I have lived my entire life in Northeast Ohio and I have never been to the theater. Crazy, right? Well, it's true, until I won tickets to see Spank! from Why Cle? and Playhouse Square!

I entered her giveaway as well as Life in the Cle's in the hopes of winning and then, I forgot about it. I never win anything this cool and nothing local, ever. It was such a surprise to open an email from Jen saying that I won! I was talking to the Husband when I opened the email and he surprised me even more by telling me he wanted to go! Unfortunately (or not), he had to work so I took my friend and Tuesdays with Cory contributor Cory to the matinee showing of Spank! at the Hanna Theater.

Cory
I am actually glad the Husband could not go because this was the perfect girls thing that we needed to do and the show was so much fun.  SPANK! The Fifty Shades Parody is an unauthorized musical based on 50 Shades of Grey but you don't need to read the books to get the tongue in cheek references.  I have read them, Cory hasn't and we were both laughing ourselves silly through the whole performance.  And, to say the male lead does not look fanTAStic in a pair of blue jeans would be a bold face lie.  Holy crap he looked good and took his shirt off enough to justify the Chippendale's comparison that the website boosts.

source
My only issue with the performance was the opening scene.  It was this dance number with the lead characters, "Hugh Hanson" and "Tasha Woode," which just confused me as to why it was there.  Once it actually started, I was able to forget the opening scene and enjoy the performance (and Hugh's nakedness) of three very talented actors.  They were clever during the improv scenes and showed real chemistry on stage.  It was so much fun to watch.  Not ground breaking or Shakespeare but certainly a whole lot of fun!  Perfect for a girls only outing.

Spank! is showing until January 27 at the Hanna and the next stop is in Monterey, California.  A complete list of tour dates are on the website here

Party in Cleveland this New Years Old School at the PowerHouse

It seems like a lifetime ago when I use to spend most of my nights and plenty of days in  PowerHouse or over at Club 1148/Club Caliente.   In addition to working at the nightclub across the parking lot, I use to work for Improv, PowerPlay and TGI Firday's.  Not always at the same time, sometimes, but not all the time.  I spent more New Years there than I can remember (because I can't) and I have a whole lot of wonderful memories from that place.  It is bitter sweet that it is now the Greater Cleveland Aquarium.

I though those days were over until my good friend shared a Facebook link and guess where we will be this New Years!  Yep, one more chance to party like it was 1999.
